BPW v Lutterworth Athletic

Match Report by Aaron Stacey

The Spartan South Midlands league hosted its first round of midweek games on Tuesday night as Lutterworth Athletic travelled 30 minutes down the road to Latimer Park as Burton Park Wanderers looked for their first points of the new campaign.

The away side started strong with Burton keeper Harvey Bolland being called into action early on as he stood strong and turned the opening shot of the game away from goal. Pressure didn’t stop from Lutterworth as they looked for an early opener but an impressive defensive line from the home side saw the travelling team be caught offside numerous times.

Burton grew into the game and began to test the Lutterworth back line with the Lyons twins (Connel and Boyd) causing all sorts of problems for the opposition full backs. Before long it was Connel Lyons who scored the opener as he brushed past the defender to slot the ball into the bottom right corner for 1-0 just before the interval.

Credit to the away side who came out of the break chasing a goal and just like at the start of the first half, pushed hard for a goal early on. Lutterworth continued to hunt a goal as they played with real composure and calmness on the ball however Burton continued to show the same determination from Saturday’s game against Real Bedford

The away side finally broke past Burton’s resilient defence as the Lutterworth number 17 tapped into an open goal at the back post to level the game.

The Wanderers responded brilliantly as a cross which found substitute Tom Clarke-Knowles was headed inches wide of the Lutterworth goal. The Lyons twins continued to threaten down the flanks as Burton pushed to regain their lead. Lutterworth dominated the final 5 minutes as they had shot after shot that hit wide and will regret that they were unable to find the net.

As the game became scrappy with both teams chasing a late winner the referee blew for full time and the game ended in a draw. Burton secured their first point of the new campaign and showed that they have the heart to go right till the very end. This will be a great asset as the side host Penn and Tylers Green in the FA VASE this Sunday.

Management Team

GoalKeeper Coach Mason Kerly

“Good team performance after a rocky start to the season.. The teams growing day by day and eventually it will come together and the points will come rolling. Fury was unbelievable again on the right side. We created the chances just needed to finish them, Lutterworth were a decent side, got into the battle well and probably should’ve took the lead if it wasnt for Harvey pulling out amazing stops throughout the 90! Overall was a good team performance the fight is consistent now and we will carry it into the FA Vase on sunday”
